Expected oedema depends on procedure, region and product volume. After botox, small pinpoint bumps generally settle within 30-60 minutes; botox is therefore considered a "no social downtime" procedure. After HA filler in mucosa-adjacent regions like the lips, swelling peaks within 24-72 hours and settles substantially within 5-7 days; the final result is evaluated at day 14. In deeper regions such as cheeks and jawline, swelling is usually more limited. Cold compresses (10-minute intervals in the first 24 hours), sleeping with the head elevated, and avoiding alcohol, salt and spicy food reduce swelling. Any abnormal swelling persisting beyond 14 days requires a clinic review.

Ecchymosis (bruising) is unavoidable but can be minimised. Risk factors include anticoagulant medications (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin), NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, ginseng, alcohol, thin skin and certain phases of the menstrual cycle. With physician approval, these are paused 5-7 days before the procedure where possible. Cannula use, careful technique and correct-plane injection lower the risk. Bruises typically fade in 5-10 days; arnica cream, vitamin K cream and occasionally pulsed-dye laser can accelerate recovery. Makeup may be used after 24 hours. Bruising that is unusually widespread, painful or expanding warrants an immediate review.

Vascular occlusion — partial or full blockage of a blood vessel by filler material — is a rare but serious emergency complication of HA filler. Warning signs include unusually severe and persistent pain after the injection, blanching or mottled / livedoid bluish discolouration of the skin, disproportionate swelling, coolness, painful nodules and, in severe cases, blurred vision, vision loss or neurological symptoms. These signs can develop within minutes to hours. If suspected, contact your clinic immediately — HA filler should be reversed with hyaluronidase within the "golden hour." After ablative fractional laser (CO2, Er:YAG) the typical course is: 48-72 hours of oedema and serous exudate, fine micro-crusting at days 3-5, natural shedding of crusts at days 5-7 and a pink-red background (erythema) until days 7-14. Full pigment normalisation may take 4-8 weeks. During recovery: do not scratch the area, do not peel crusts manually, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, apply the prescribed healing creams (panthenol, hyaluronic acid, synthetic barrier creams) and use SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen 2-3 times daily. Non-ablative fractional protocols recover faster (3-5 days). Heat exposure (sauna, steam room, intense exercise) is postponed for at least 7 days. Unexpected swelling, fluid accumulation, purulent discharge or severe pain require review.
