Why does this guide start in spring?
Skin is a much more seasonal organ than many patients realize. Skin that has been covered, exposed to low humidity and central heating during winter must adapt to increasing light, fluctuating humidity, and gradually rising temperatures in spring. This transition is the most misunderstood period for the face.
A large portion of my patients complain that their skin, which was comfortable in winter, suddenly becomes temperamental in spring. Often, the problem is not the skin, but that the routine has not changed. This book was designed precisely to fill this gap, to show every patient that the language of the season is a learnable behavior.
What changes in skin physiology in spring?
The strength of sunlight increases, days lengthen, and environmental humidity begins to fluctuate. In the same period, the dermatological footprint of pollen and air pollution increases. Corneocyte cells on the skin's surface are sensitive to changes in moisture; the oil reserve produced in winter may now be excessive, leading to acne, fungal-like follicular irritations, or seborrheic flare-ups.
During this period, melanocytes, the pigmentation cells, also begin to be stimulated. It is not yet summer, but UVA radiation, unlike in winter, reaches the dermis and lays the groundwork for spots. So, a significant part of the problem seen in spring is related to not having designed the skin before summer begins.
What happens when summer arrives?
With the increase in temperature, sebum production and sweating change significantly. Skin pH temporarily rises; this affects the microbiota and triggers patients prone to acne. UV load peaks; therefore, photoprotection should become an indispensable habit throughout the summer.
The most common complaint in summer is shine. Patients often turn to more aggressive cleansers to make their skin appear matte; however, skin with barrier damage produces more oil. This is one of the main messages of this guide: even in summer, we manage the skin by balancing it, not by drying it out.

- UV load peaks; photoprotection should be repeated daily.
- Air conditioning, sea salt, and pool chlorine cause barrier fatigue.
- Pigment cells are more easily stimulated; existing spots may darken.

Clinical note:The most common mistake I encounter in the clinic is carrying over winter skincare unchanged into summer. Continuing the same heavy cream, the same harsh peeling, the same routine in summer often tires the skin.
Is the season your barrier's friend or foe?
The barrier is your skin's intelligent wall that filters every external impact. In spring, sudden temperature changes, and in summer, chlorinated water, air conditioning, and high UV, slightly erode this wall. A fatigued barrier can make the skin's surface appear dry and oily underneath; maskne, itching, sensitivity, and redness may begin.
Therefore, as summer approaches, my primary goal is to strengthen the barrier and establish a photoprotection regimen that does not tire it. For a patient, the biggest investment in summer is not "more products" but "the right order."
Seasonal differences in female, male, young, and mature skin
Hormonal fluctuations can be a melasma trigger, especially in women; in men, beard area folliculitis and barrier damage due to summer shaving are more common. While acne usually worsens in adolescence during summer, loss of elasticity and pigment density become more pronounced in patients over 40.
This guide includes sections divided for each subgroup. Because a single summer routine cannot be right for everyone; the smart approach is to notice the nuances that vary from skin to skin.
Oxidative stress and free radicals
When sun, pollution, intense physical exercise, and stress combine, skin cells are exposed to reactive oxygen species we call "free radicals." These molecules target cell membranes and DNA; they accelerate collagen breakdown, trigger pigmentation, and increase signs of aging.
Antioxidants neutralize the effect of these reactive molecules. In spring and summer, antioxidant support should be increased both topically (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, ferulic acid, resveratrol) and systemically (polyphenols, carotenoids, rich plant-based nutrition).
I strongly recommend including an antioxidant serum in your morning routine. The antioxidant + SPF combination can provide 20-30% higher total protection than SPF alone. This is important practical information; many patients cannot benefit from the true potential of SPF because they do not use antioxidants.
Light and skin color biology
Melanin is the natural pigment that protects the skin from UV. However, when its activities are uncontrolled, undesirable results such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and solar lentigo occur. Fitzpatrick skin types are classified as I-II light, III-IV medium, V-VI dark.
As skin type darkens, the UV burn threshold increases, but the likelihood of pigment problems also increases. Dark-skinned patients have a longer delay in skin cancer diagnosis; therefore, an annual examination is recommended for all skin colors.
