Skin is the body's nutritional report. This section explains which nutrients are critical for skin biochemistry and which "healthy" fads actually don't work.

The skin's essential macro and micronutrients

Protein: the building blocks of collagen are amino acids — glycine, proline, lysine, especially hydroxyproline. Low protein intake (below 0.8 g/kg per day) restricts collagen synthesis. Ideal is 1.2-1.6 g/kg.

Omega-3: fish, flaxseed, walnuts. Nourishes the skin's lipid barrier, reduces inflammation. Chronic low omega-3 leads to dryness, sensitivity, and eczema tendency.

Vitamin C: an essential cofactor for collagen hydroxylation. 500-1000 mg/day (food + supplement) is suitable for skin synthesis.

Zinc: necessary for keratinocyte division; plays a role in acne and wound healing. 15-25 mg/day.

Silicon (bamboo, cucumber, whole grains): contributes to elastin and glycosaminoglycan synthesis.

Biotin and B complex: essential for keratin production, skin surface integrity.

Mediterranean diet: evidence-based longevity nutrition

Longevity studies in aging science (e.g., Blue Zones, PREDIMED study) yield consistent results: an olive oil-centered, vegetable- and fruit-rich, moderate fish, low red meat, whole grain-based diet reduces both cardiovascular and cellular aging markers. This effect also applies to the skin — epidemiological studies show that populations adhering to a Mediterranean-like diet have fewer skin aging markers (wrinkles, pigmentation).

Attention:Milk, especially skim milk, can trigger acne. Studies show that acne rates are significantly higher in adolescents with high milk consumption. Increased IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) is suggested as a cause. A 2-3 month trial of cutting out milk is valuable for those with acne and pigmentation complaints.

Diets that seem like trends but have weak evidence

Collagen peptide drinks: hydrolyzed collagen (especially 10-15 g/day) can show a partial effect in studies; but the price/effect ratio is weaker than topical retinoids.

Detox teas: "skin cleansing" is marketing language; the liver and kidneys are already our detoxification systems. These teas are diuretics, causing water loss; skin radiance is temporary.

Gluten-free diet: no proven skin benefit in non-celiac individuals. Based solely on fashion.

Ultra-low carbohydrate: may be effective in the short term, but in the long term, it's difficult to get the glucose needed for collagen synthesis. A balanced approach should be preferred.
