IV Therapy and Systemic Longevity: From Vein to Skin

As IV therapy (intravenous supplementation) has grown in popularity, so has its misuse. This section explains which IV protocols have a real effect, which are marketing-driven, and their true indications.

IV treatment rationale

An oral supplement first passes through the stomach, then the intestines, then the liver. "First-pass" liver metabolism breaks down some of the drug before it can be used. IV administration bypasses this process — the molecule enters the vein directly, reaching maximum concentration in the plasma within minutes. For example, 500 mg of oral vitamin C raises blood levels to 70-80 µmol/L; 5 g of IV vitamin C can provide 15-20 times more (1000-1500 µmol/L).

IV protocols with real effects for the skin

Glutathione IV: the skin's "master antioxidant"; the IV form is widely used in Asian clinics for pigmentation and age spots. It reduces melanogenesis and increases skin radiance.

High-dose vitamin C (5-15 g IV): antioxidant and immune support; accelerates recovery after surgery/procedures.

B complex IV: energy metabolism and general cell function; complementary in patients with chronic fatigue/stress.

NAD+ IV: a key molecule for cellular energy production and sirtuin activity. Clinical studies are early but promising. A popular protocol within the framework of aging science.

Hydration + electrolytes: recovery after jet lag, alcohol, high physical exertion — also gives noticeable radiance to the skin.

Attention:Home care IV protocols or "trendy" IV therapies should not be performed without medical supervision. There are risks of phlebitis, allergic reactions, and electrolyte imbalances. At the same time, the "IV for diseases" logic requires medical diagnosis and doctor's control.

NAD+: the new star of aging

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) performs two critical functions within the cell: it is an electron carrier in mitochondrial ATP production and a cofactor for sirtuin enzymes (which regulate aging processes). With age, cellular NAD+ levels drop dramatically — a decline starting around age 40 can reach 50-60% by the 60s.

NAD+ supplementation can be done in three ways: (1) oral NMN or NR as precursors; (2) direct IV NAD+; (3) subcutaneous injection. The IV route provides the fastest increase, administered in sessions lasting 3-4 hours. Early phase studies on clinical biomarkers of aging are yielding positive results. In my clinic, I consider it a complementary treatment for selected longevity profiles.
