Sleep stages and skin
A night's sleep consists of 4-6 cycles. Each cycle includes N1-N2-N3-REM stages. N3 (deep sleep) is the critical stage for the skin; the peak of growth hormone release occurs in this stage. Growth hormone pushes fibroblasts to collagen synthesis, accelerating cell renewal. The REM stage is related to brain repair but also indirectly affects the skin through psychoimmunological pathways — it reduces stress and balances cortisol.
Cortisol-melatonin balance
Cortisol is a stress hormone; it has a rhythm that is high in the morning and low in the evening. Melatonin is a sleep hormone; it rises in the evening and falls in the morning. When the rhythm of these two hormones is disrupted (shift work, jet lag, chronic stress), the skin's repair window is also missed. Chronically high cortisol accelerates collagen breakdown, increases inflammation, and slows wound healing.
Clinical note:Melatonin is actually a powerful antioxidant. As of 2024, topical melatonin formulations have begun to be developed; when applied in the evening, they support the skin's circadian antioxidant system.
Healthy sleep habits for your skin
- At least 7 hours, preferably 8 hours of night sleep
- Bedtime before 23:00 (skin repair window 23:00-03:00)
- Break from blue light 1 hour before bedtime
- Evening furniture lights in warm tones (below 2700K)
- Room temperature 18-20°C — cooler sleep, deeper sleep
- Sleeping on your back or side — don't bury your face in the pillow
Is "Beauty sleep" misunderstood?
The phrase "beauty sleep" sounds very cosmetic, but it is a biological reality. Studies show that those who sleep less than 6 hours have a 30% more impaired skin barrier function, 25% higher skin water loss, and their perceived age is 2-3 years higher. So "beauty sleep" is indeed a biological reality.
